about

The paper is divided into chapters that, together, integrate some of my preoccupations as both an art historian and an art practitioner in the field of the visual culture of religion. Coming from the mouth of a Calvinistic Protestant, the title ‘The End of Vision’ may sound more of a threat than a treat. The title does, however, reflect a Protestant’s caution regarding the purpose and limit of religious representations. Informed by this sensibility, my general aim is very broad and introductory: I want to present an overview of varieties of religious representation and some of their functions, and to demonstrate that neither making nor seeing religious images is as straightforward and unproblematic as we sometimes suppose.

The presentation is, here, in four parts (which does not reflect the divisions of the paper).
