about

In this paper, I consider Welsh chapels in relation to not only architecture but also the mindset of those who worshipped within them – the Welsh Nonconformists. In so doing, I will be examining the significance that these buildings had for them in respect to: style, design, and fittings; worship, Scripture, and theology; and religious history, and religious, ecclesiastical and national identity. These topics will be discussed under three headings: architecture, the Bible, and culture. In particular, I will show how the architectural aspects of the chapels were: shaped by biblical principles and theology; interpreted through a biblical outlook; and used as cultural and religious propaganda.

The presentation is, here, in two parts (which does not reflect the divisions of the paper).
